The Federal Police Orchestra Munich was founded in 1952 as the "Music Corps of the BGS" and is thus almost as old as the Federal Police itself, which was founded in 1951 as the Federal Police. As a sign of the high esteem in which the staff is held, the symphonic wind orchestra is regularly available for internal service events. In addition, it supports the public relations work of the Federal Police with benefit concerts, public events with the participation of Federal Police information stands and also promotes its presence in cooperation with other authorities. The Federal Police Orchestra Munich has been part of the Federal Police Headquarters Potsdam since March 2008. The orchestra's home base and the starting point for its numerous trips to perform far beyond southern Germany is the Federal Police Headquarters in Munich. The mission of the Munich Federal Police Orchestra is to cultivate the image of the Federal Police in the public eye. With its professional performances, the orchestra is an important figurehead and representative of the Federal Police.

Gerd Herklotz was born on 27 May 1961 in Glashütte (Saxony) and received his musical imprint from the age of 10 as a member of the Dresden Kreuzchor, where he also worked as choir and organ prefect. After studying conducting (with Professor Siegfried Kurz) and piano at the Hochschule für Musik Carl Maria von Weber Dresden, he was engaged as 1st Kapellmeister at the Halberstadt Theatre. In this capacity he subsequently worked at the theatres in Bautzen, Zwickau and Vorpommern (Stralsund/Greifswald). During this time he conducted a large number of concerts, opera productions, operettas and musicals as well as major ballet productions. German premieres as well as world premieres were an essential part of his activities from the beginning. In 2003 he became chief conductor of the Ludwig musical "Sehnsucht nach dem Paradies" in Füssen and in 2006 chief conductor of the orchestra "Neues Sinfonieorchester Berlin". He has also worked as a guest conductor at numerous theatres and orchestras in Germany, including the "Dresdner Philharmonie", the "Nationaltheater Mannheim" and the "Theater Kiel". He has also conducted in Tokyo, Seoul and Moscow. Since February 2018, Gerd Herklotz has been the new director of the Federal Police Orchestra Berlin.
